UMA Mission

The Utah Museums Association (UMA) builds the capacity of Utah’s museum community through advocacy and professional development opportunities.

 

Executive Summary

Utah’s museums are critical to the educational, cultural, and economic vitality of our state. The Utah Museums Association is dedicated to advancing museums across Utah. UMA does this by encouraging and bolstering professionalism for museum-associated individuals and institutions of all sizes and disciplines. Noteworthy programs include professional development, museum advocacy, and statewide information sharing.

 

Experience & Skills Needed

UMA relies heavily on volunteers to deliver our programs and services and seeks members with skills and/or willingness to work in the following areas:

  • Programming
  • Fundraising/Grant writing
  • PR and/or Marketing
  • Web Content Management
  • Social Media
  • Graphic Design
  • Advocacy
  • Finance/Budgeting
  • Strategic Planning 

 

Board of Directors Expectations

Board members serve a 3-year term, with an option to be invited to renew for a second 1-3 year term. All UMA Board Members are expected to have the support of their institutions to fulfill the following responsibilities:
  • Maintain current UMA membership at either an individual or institutional level
  • Attend the UMA Annual Conference and related programming
  • Attend at least 4 of the 5 board meetings, annually (3 in-person and 2 virtual)
  • Contribute to the general oversight and management of the organization spending an average of 6 hours per month plus meetings
  • Secure 2 items (each valued at $100+) for the silent auction fundraiser
  • Contribute financially at a personally significant level
  • Serve as an ambassador for the Utah Museums Association
  • Serve on one or more committees, including monthly conference calls 

 

Committee Member Expectations

Committee members serve a 1-year term, with an option to be invited to renew for additional terms. 
  • Advocacy [plan and execute annual advocacy day]
  • Auction [solicit items and help manage the auction during the conference]
  • Conference Program [solicit proposals and create program for annual conference]
  • Conference Host [helps with local arrangements for the conference]
  • Museum Exchange [plan and facilitate monthly calls]
  • Museum Month [plan and execute annual museum month]
  • Nominations [help identify potential board and committee members]
  • Sponsorship [identify and solicit sponsors]
All UMA Committee Members are expected to have the support of their institutions to fulfill the following responsibilities:
  • Maintain current UMA membership at either an individual or institutional level
  • Attend the UMA Annual Conference and related programming
  • Attend committee meetings and fulfill assignments (average of 4 hours per month)

 

Timeline

Applications will be accepted from January 1- June 18, 2025. Applicants will be contacted by July 31, 2025 with further steps. Individuals may be contacted outside of these dates with an invitation to submit an application.
