Dear UMA Members and Friends:

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center in Burlington, Vermont for the first time with my beloved niece. While exploring a new museum is always fun, experiencing the exhibitions, objects, and interactive displays through her three-year-old eyes was particularly enjoyable. We learned about land formations by playing in a topographic sand box, uncovered Beluga Whale fossils from an ancient Champlain Sea, and we learned about water currents as we skippered wooden boats down a lazy river display… It was a fun day.

Weaving through the museum displays at the hand of an enthusiastic toddler reminded me of my own early experiences visiting museums. I can clearly recall moments when a painting or object transported me back in time and otherwise elusive historical events suddenly came to life through an artist’s brushstroke or a fossil’s secrets. My childhood museum visits marked the beginning of a lifelong fascination with thinking about our natural history and social constructs through lenses only museums can provide… I could see the same seeds of wonder sprouting in my little niece.

Luckily, my brother and sister-in-law are members of this small, local institution along the shores of Lake Champlain and as such, my toddler niece has already spent countless hours there. She is well on her way to creating her own memories and inspirational museum moments, just as I did so many years ago. She is a brand-new museum lover and for that… I am so grateful.

Your friend and colleague,
