Hello wonderful museum friends,

I hope you are reading this blog post somewhere where it’s nice and cool!

We are in the hottest time of the year and hopefully tourists are knocking your doors down while on their family vacations. Are you offering them something to do in addition to a guided tour? What about hands on activities that correlate to items or displays in your facility? What a great time of year to engage our visitors!

The pioneer holiday is fast approaching and Utah has an amazing history when it comes to the past, with all the trials and travails that early pioneers endured to make it through to their final stop. And speaking of pioneers, at this year’s conference we will have two new awards-Award for Excellence and the Rising Professional Award. Be sure to check out the UMA website for the new awards and submit nominations by August 15. Criteria and descriptions can be found at:

Also, as we head into August and the fall, have you determined who is running for office in your city, county or state offices? As usual, I encourage all of you to find out who is running and what their opinion is of their organization and museums in general. We’d LOVE to see the additional one-time money that was allocated for the grants budget move to ongoing so, talk to those legislators and potential legislators. August 9-16 is also "Invite Congress to visit your museum" week. AAM has put together some tips on inviting Congress to your museum at

Stay cool my friends and I’ll see you in Cedar City.
