Ruth White and I had a wonderful opportunity to represent the Utah Museums Association at a meeting convened by IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) and AAM (American Alliance of Museums) at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville Arkansas in late March.

Our trip out was very exciting. The flight to Houston was uneventful, but our connecting flight from Houston to Fayetteville was delayed, delayed…and then cancelled. While standing in line for customer service we met three other people who were trying to get to the conference as well. We went up to the counter en masse to see what could be done. After exploring the options (which weren't good), we decided to rent a vehicle and drive the TEN hours to Bentonville. We arrived in Bentonville at 3:15 am, went to bed at 3:30 am, were up at 6:30 and headed to the airport to pick up our luggage, and made the conference at 9:15.

In attendance, there were 80 representatives from 44 states, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and a handful of IMLS and AAM staff members—all there to determine the state of museum associations. The two and a half day retreat was very beneficial in learning that we are not alone in our struggles and most of us are experiencing the same issues. We worked in small groups to identify who our stakeholders are and possible partnership opportunities. We also shared our successes and challenges in meeting the needs of our members.

One of the major strengths of UMA is our advocacy at all levels. Many other states don't have an Advocacy component to their associations.

Because of our attendance at this convening and my experience in Advocacy, I have been asked to be the plenary speaker at the Colorado-Wyoming Association of Museums (CWAM) Conference in Cody, WY on May 8. I am honored to be asked, and will look forward to representing the Utah Museums Association and our wonderful organizations! Look forward to my blog post which will cover the CWAM conference.

As always, make it a great day!!!!
