Dear Leaders of Utah’s Cities and Towns,
Emergency preparedness is sometimes seen as a nagging task that needs to be done. While we recognize the thousands of competing priorities for your time and efforts, we'd invite you to consider one day to kick off emergency preparedness for your employees and communities.

The Great Utah ShakeOut is back!

On Thursday, April 21, at 10:15 a.m., hundreds of thousands of Utahns will practice the correct earthquake actions of drop, cover and hold on as they participate in the only statewide emergency drill in Utah.

We invite you to engage your employees and communities in this effort.

Participation is simple.

Register your city employees as participants by going to http://shakeout.org/utah/. Registered participants will:

▪ Be a part of the largest earthquake drill ever, spanning more than 44 states and territories, plus several other countries!

▪ Be included on lists of who is participating in your area (optional)

▪ Be updated with ShakeOut news and resources, and information about earthquakes and preparedness

▪ Be provided a customized 2016 ShakeOut Certificate of Participation to print after the drill

▪ Be an example that motivates others to get prepared

▪ Have peace of mind that you, your family, your co-workers and millions of others will be better prepared to survive and quickly recover from a big earthquake!

Your residents are counting on your organizations to be prepared and resilient in case of both local and widespread emergencies.

Once you hold your drill on or around April 21, help employees discuss how they can be better prepared both at home and at work. Do they have emergency kits at home and at work? Do they have backup plans? How will city employees be notified they are needed to serve your residents?

Please feel free to download any of the various resources available on the ShakeOut website, including banners for your city website, flyers, posters and even manuals to help you plan your drill.

Then, encourage your residents to participate, as well. You can share the ShakeOut by following Utah ShakeOut on Twitter or Facebook.
