Dear Colleagues:

Despite a global pandemic, our communities have taken to the streets because ending systemic racism is long overdue. The Board of the Utah Museums Association affirms that Black Lives Matter and stands in solidarity with our communities of color today, tomorrow, and forever.

We acknowledge that there remains much more to be done. As we fulfill our mission to build the capacity of Utah museums, we will continue to provide resources and space for our members to discuss and internalize the role of equity, inclusion, diversity, and accessibility in the museum field. We can do more and we will.

Going forward, we will continue to focus on recruiting board members that reflect the diversity of our museum community. We encourage UMA members throughout Utah to actively do the same to ensure their staff, collections, and programming better reflect the diverse communities they serve. We believe museums can and should be safe gathering spaces for all people, not just the majority. The history, arts, and humanities displayed in our galleries can provide a catalyst for needed conversations on these topics. We have compiled some resources to help you here. We encourage you to reach out, tell us what you need and where we have fallen short. Together we can do better. We will do better.

Sincerely,

Utah Museums Association Board
