With less than a week to go, the Utah Museums Association board and members are gearing up for what is going to be an excellent conference this year in Cedar City. There is a great selection of panel topics and discussions to choose from and a nightly soiree of professional development events such as meet-and-greets to dinners planned.

Of particular note is this year’s Keynote Address speaker, Elizabeth Merritt. Founding Director of the Center for the Future of Museums (CFM), Elizabeth works with the American Alliance of Museums to pinpoint and analyze trends and activities that will affect museums into the future. Through her work at the CFM, Elizabeth oversees and produces Trendswatch, a yearly report that discusses several topics that are currently affecting or will affect how museums operate and how they can utilize new trends to their benefit. Prior to being appointed the Director of the Center for the Future of Museums, Elizabeth worked maintaining Excellence programs through AAM, including Museum Assessment and Peer Review programs. In addition to writing heavily referenced standards books such as the “AAM Guide to Collections Planning” and “National Standards and Best Practices for U.S. Museums,” Elizabeth’s work and expertise in Future Studies will undoubtedly provide an excellent background for this year’s conference theme “Storytelling for the Future.” Museums and the future: what are you excited to hear more about?
