Dear UMA Members and Friends:

The whirlwind of midterm election season has drawn to a close and with it brings possible change in representation of your museum’s district. What might this mean for your museum and why does it matter? Simply put, building relationships builds advocacy. Knowing our elected officials leads to increased awareness, which in turn encourages and strengthens public and legislative support for our arts and culture institutions… All good things!

Now is a great time – before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season – to familiarize yourself with your museum’s legislative delegation. Has a new representative or senator been elected to your museum’s district? Do you know which incumbents will be returning to Capitol Hill? Loads of information can be found at www.le.utah.gov. From this site, you can use the search function “who represents me?” at the bottom of the page to discover everything you need to know about your museum’s legislative district and delegation. From there, further information can be found by following direct links to individual legislator pages as well as county clerk offices. I encourage you to explore the website and reach out to your newly elected and/or returning officials.

Lastly, as we begin to prepare our menus and shopping lists for the upcoming holiday, I will leave you with this month’s “President’s Pic”, snapped at the UMFA in front of James T. Harwood’s Preparations for Dinner (1890). It is my privilege to contribute to Utah’s rich and wonderful museum community and I am grateful every day to be surrounded by such inspiring and lovely works of art. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving… and may all your holiday feasts be as beautiful (and delicious) as this painting!

Your friend and colleague,

Sonja Lunde, President
