Hello wonderful UMA members,

I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day, Mother’s/Father’s Day and are ready for a busy summer.

At this time of the year, we as museum folks shift our focus from school groups to tourists. For a lot of us, the summer season can provide most of our numbers and financial support. If you don’t already have one, consider a “Donations Accepted” jar at your visitor’s services desk or entrance.

I also want to remind you to have a guest register or comments book for your visitors. If someone has a transformative experience at your location you want to be able to use what they have to say, and in some cases, talk more to the visitor about their experience or history. These are great to use when talking to your legislators whether they are on the local, state or federal level.

Speaking of legislators, the primaries are over and all across the state candidates are gearing up for the midterm election in November. Do you know who is running in your district? Have you introduced yourself to them? Invited them to your facility? Asked them their opinion about museums? You have incredible power as we head to the fall elections. Make sure whoever is running is supportive of your organization.

Lastly, speaking of the fall, I hope you are making plans to join us in Cedar City for the annual conference. It will be an amazing conference in an amazing place (I might be biased since I graduated from SUSC), with wonderful sessions and attendees!
