Museum Day is coming…. Museum Day is coming…

Submitted on Thursday, February 16, 2012 - 4:14pm
Museum Day on the Hill will be Tuesday, February 28 from 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. This year is very important to you and your museum because of redistricting and the number of new legislators in this session. As of this writing, there are three new Representatives in the House and one in the Senate, according to the Utah State Legislature website.  Why is civic...

A New (Super)Man in Town

Submitted on Thursday, February 16, 2012 - 4:10pm
This may come as a shock to many of you, but we have a new Superman . . . and  Batman . . . and Wonder Woman. That’s right, in September of 2011 DC comics, of which I have been a loyal supporter for many years, re-launched all of their titles. Action Comics and Detective Comics, each of which were up to issues in the high 600’s started over at issue number one. To put that in...

Elvis slept here...well sort of...

Elvis slept here . . . well sort of. O.K. not actually, but he did fly over the city once. As a museum curator and historian, I am constantly bombarded with statements such as these. Museum exhibits and history texts often exaggerate the importance of their collection or site. Museums serve the public by being centers of connection. We do a disservice to our patrons if we provide...

When a door closes – another . . . .

Submitted on Monday, October 31, 2011 - 8:42am
Well, the 2011 UMA conference is over. I hope everyone had an entertaining, inspirational, and educational time. The Logan weather cooperated perfectly and I know that I had an amazing experience on my Wednesday field trip. Comic Book Art  and the company of good friends, what more can one ask? Well, maybe a large monetary donation or several weeks off with pay, but I am happy to have my...

Television, Nephi, and inedible sausage

Submitted on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 4:54pm
I must confess something. Fall is my favorite time of year. I enjoy the cooler temperatures, the UMA conference, and my birthday. However, it is the beginning of the fall television season that really gets me thinking. I love television, not all of it, but some of my best ideas have come to me while watching some of my favorite shows. Like you, I have my favorites, Doctor Who, Pawn Stars, and...

2011 Legislative Update

Submitted on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 - 11:48am
By Jayceen Craven Walker The past legislative session was an interesting one as it always is. Two items of note before we cover the details: Senator Chris Buttars (R-West Jordan) resigned at the close of the session March 11 and Senator Dennis Stowell (R-District 28) passed away Sunday, April 17 after a battle with cancer. Replacements for both offices have not been finalized as of this writing....

271 museums in 2 years - the journey begins

Submitted on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 - 11:31am
I heard some bad news recently. A monument to my youth will soon be no longer. I grew up in Riverdale, within walking distance to one of the most glorious movie theaters I ever sat in, The Cinedome 70. I still remember walking up the darkened winding ramps into one of the gigantic domes. The massive screen towered over the plush seats and as I waited for the film to start my eyes would wander...
